Asphalt Miles
by Sharon Alexander
It was all about escape
unknown roads, headlights
blasting trees with light,
a momentary illusion
focus, flash & gone.
All about asphalt miles,
mountain roads for thrills,
flatlands for the blues,
motion, movement, gone.
Hurling beyond borders
past the photo’s edge
I was running from escaping,
moving toward emerging,
unthinkably 19.
Streak of metal machinery
ripping up the road,
tearing up the night.
Stopping somewhere
deep in Kansas
side of the road,
dead of night.
Corn and cattle
wrapped in darkness
still enough
to break your heart.
Wrapped in armor
of endless miles,
white line highway
ripping the road,
tearing up the night.
