Ode to St. Stephen's Day
By Maria Elena Mahler
menstrual irritation
flowing over unfulfilled detachments
filling my stocking with only the bells of Dublin
holding the soup in one piece
above the holiday remorse
the tofu turkey
the murdered xmas tree
i want to grow
i want to fly
beyond the desolation
the self serving masturbation
where santa is a childhood lie
I don’t want to feel like a hypocrite
feeding the homeless one meal a year
to light my tree
our country ‘tis of thee
promoting world peace and harmony
while making midnight mass bombing runs
the pope ducks for cover
inside his religious bubble
of the non-reflecting congregation
shielded from the starving
and those that love god differently
do we practice what we preach
exchanging gifts unanimously
singing carols unconditionally
or are we rehearsing
our own requiem
inadvertently
